Questions & Answers About Window Coverings

We get asked a lot of questions about window coverings, so we thought we’d share some of the most common ones. We’ve broken them down into categories to make it easier to find what you’re looking for. If you’ve got a burning question that isn’t answered here, please send us a note, and we’ll answer it!

Getting Started with the Process:

Where are you located?

We have a beautiful showroom across from Fisherman’s Wharf on the Island Highway in Campbell River which serves Black Creek, Oyster River, Sayward, Quadra Island, Cortes Island and beyond! It is a white building with a blue metal roof and used to be Beaver Aquatics. The address is 760A Island Highway. There is free street parking out front. The showroom is open Mon-Thurs from 10-5 but we recommend that you book an appointment so that a specialist can be available to show you around.

Our second location is located in Comox and serves the Comox Valley, Courtenay, Royston, Union Bay, Cumberland, Qualicum and more! The showroom is located in the Comox Mall and is currently under construction and will be opening soon. In the meantime, contact us and we’ll come to you!

What areas do you service?

With 2 showrooms to serve you in Campbell River & Comox Valley, we’re never too far away to come and see our huge selection of interior & exterior window treatments and shading options in person. You can try out the different operating systems and compare products side by side. We also provide free in-home consultations all across Central Vancouver Island (see our service areas map). So not to worry, we’ve got you covered!

I have no idea where to start—do I need to come into the showroom first?

You’re not alone! Most people feel unsure at first. We recommend starting in the showroom because it helps you see the products, try the controls, and talk through your space before we bring curated options to your home. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure way to get clarity. Just make sure you reach out first to make sure a specialist will be available to answer questions.

Can I get a price for window coverings over the phone?

People often ask if they can get a rough quote for new blinds or custom drapes without a consultation. We can give you a general range, but to provide an accurate price, we need to understand your space, measurements, and which features matter most to you. It’s not about upselling—it’s about making sure what we quote actually fits and functions beautifully. For a general guide of what to expect for custom window covering pricing, you can download our free Price Guide.

Do I have to know what type of window coverings I want before I book a consultation?

Not at all. Helping you figure that out is our job. We’ll ask the right questions and show you options for different blinds, shades, drapes, shutters or other window treatment that make sense for your space, lifestyle, and budget.

What’s the difference between custom and off-the-shelf blinds?

Custom means the product is made to fit your exact windows—both in size and style. That means better function, better appearance, and longer-lasting results. Off-the-shelf options can be okay for standard windows, but they often require cutting or compromise.

Are custom blinds or other window treatments expensive?

Custom doesn’t always mean pricey. It means it’s made to fit your space exactly—functionally and visually. We carry a wide range of options, from entry-level to premium, and we’ll work with your budget.

I’m not sure if we can afford this right now—should I still come in?

Absolutely. We’ll help you understand your options and pricing range, even if you’re not ready to move forward yet. No pressure—just good information.

Are you going to come into my home and pressure me to buy?

Never. That’s not the Relish way. Our consultations are low-pressure, collaborative, and designed to help you make a confident decision—on your timeline.

How long does the whole process of ordering blinds usually take?

When it comes to ordering custom window treatments it varies depending on the type of product. From consultation to install, most orders take about 4 weeks. Custom drapery, shutters or other specialty products can take 6–10 weeks. We are very efficient and as soon as you provide your deposit, we place your orders and get your installation scheduled into the queue - that is why we have a faster turn around than other companies! We’ll also keep you updated every step of the way.

Is Relish a good choice for window coverings?

We’re glad you asked! And the answer is: ABSOLUTELY! We do one thing, and we do it well - we help you control the weather (inside and outside your home). We are window covering specialists, which means we know what we’re doing. And we care about you! Don’t believe us? Check out our great reviews!

Consultations:

Do you offer free in-home consultations for window coverings?

Yes, you bet! We start out with a free consultation in one of our showrooms so you can see all of the different products and try out the operating systems. Then after we narrow down your selections, we provide a free in-home consultation to confirm the details and take detailed measurements.

What kinds of things should I be thinking about before choosing my window coverings?

When choosing what type of blind, shade, shutter, drape or other shading solution, a few helpful things to consider are:

  • What do I want to control (light, heat, glare, nosy neighbors)?

  • What direction do my windows face?

  • Can I reach the windows?

  • Do I want to operate the window treatments by hand, remote, or my phone?

  • Are there any unique challenges?

  • Are there kids or pets to consider?

But don’t worry—we’ll walk you through it all.

What if my partner/spouse isn’t here—should we wait before doing a consultation for blinds?

If they’ll be part of the decision, it’s great to include them. But if it doesn’t work out to coordinate schedules right now, you can absolutely come in solo first—we’ll give you the info to review together. We’re happy to meet again or do a joint consult later.

Will you bring samples to my home?

Yes! Once we’ve narrowed it down in the showroom, we bring specific samples to your in-home consult so you can see how they look in your actual space and with your lighting. That’s also when we take the detailed measurements of your windows and identify any obstructions or limitations that we need to work around.

What if I have an unusual window or skylight?

We’ve seen it all—arched windows, angled walls, motorized skylight shades. Our job is to find the solution that fits and functions well. Custom is what we do.

Will you measure the windows for me?

Yes! That’s a key part of the in-home visit. We take precise measurements so everything fits exactly as it should—no guesswork. We also look for any obstructions or other challenges that we may need to work around. And it’s when we bring samples so you can see them in your space and with your lighting.

Do I need to move my furniture or take down my old blinds before you come?

If there is big bulky furniture completely blocking the windows, we may ask you to move it before we come, but typically we’ll work around your existing setup. And we’ll even take down your old blinds at install unless you’d prefer to do it yourself. We do ask that you move furniture out of the way when we come to install though, so that our tech can get into the space with a ladder and tools.

Are these window coverings safe for pets and children?

There is a lot of concern about Child & Pet Safety when it comes to window treatments and blinds due to cords. Yes—we offer cordless options and motorized systems that are designed with child and pet safety in mind. We’ll guide you to the safest choice for your household. To learn more about Health Canada’s Corded Window Covering Regulations, read this post.

Do I need to clean or prepare my home before the in-home consultation?

Not unless you want to! Just make sure we can access the windows easily. We’ll take care of measuring, checking clearance, and spotting any tricky parts. We do ask that you don’t smoke when we’re in your home, and keep pets tucked away if they aren’t great with strangers.

Will you tell me if something I picked won’t work?

Absolutely. Our job is to prevent mistakes—not let you make one. We’ll walk you through anything that doesn’t make sense for your window, lifestyle, or budget.

What if I want to do just one window now and the rest later?

Totally fine! Many of our clients do it in phases. We can take measurements of everything now, and keep it on file so it’s easy to add more later with consistent style and function.

What if I change my mind after seeing the sample at home?

No problem! We’ll bring all the samples that you are thinking of so you can see them in your space and confirm the colour and style before you buy. If we need to re-visit options and meet again, we can do that. We’d rather take an extra step now than have you live with something you don’t love.

Will you help me with design ideas or should I hire a designer too?

We’re pretty design savvy and can certainly help with the decisions related to choosing the right style, textures and colour for your custom window treatments. But if you have other design related questions, we have got some amazing professional designers that we’ll refer you to!

Product Based Questions:

What’s the difference between blinds, shades, and shutters?

This is one of the most common questions we get—and for good reason! Each type of window treatment has its own look, function, and feel:

  • Blinds have adjustable slats (horizontal or vertical) that tilt to control light. They’re great for flexibility and tend to be budget-friendly. Common materials include faux wood, real wood and aluminum.

  • Shades are made from continuous fabric and roll, fold, or glide up and down. They offer a cleaner, softer look and come in a wide variety of styles like roller shades, cellular shades, roman shades, sheer shades, dual or zebra shades and more.

  • Shutters are solid, permanent fixtures that mount to your window frame. They feature louvered panels that tilt for light control and are typically made from wood or composite. Shutters offer timeless style and excellent insulation.

Still not sure what’s best for your space? That’s exactly why we start in the showroom—so you can see, touch, and operate each one in person.

Can I still get Top-Down Bottom-Up Blinds?

We get asked about top-down bottom-up cellular or honeycomb shades a lot! In 2022 Health Canada update the Corded Window Covering Regulations making all exposed cords over 8” non-compliant. That meant the shades that opened from the top and bottom were no longer available in Canada. But they’re back! And they aren’t all created equal! We’ll show you the differences and what to expect, as well as other options that can serve a similar purpose.

What’s the best window covering for privacy at night but light during the day?

That’s a great question - people often ask how they can get both daytime privacy and room darkening at night. There are many window covering solutions that combine two opacities for maximum functionality. These might include sheer shades, banded shades, cellular or honeycomb shades with two type of fabric, or other window treatments with a separate shade behind for room darkening or blackout. Layering with drapes is another beautiful solution. We’ll work with you to determine the pros and cons for each option and determine the best choice for you.

What is the best black-out blind?

The terms room darkening and black-out are often used interchangeably, but they aren’t exactly the same. Room darkening can be achieved with most types of blinds or window shades by using an opaque material. They will still allow some light to “leak” around edges or between vanes which means they aren’t considered “black out”. In order to achieve full blackout in a bedroom for sleeping, you need to block ALL of the light at the window. Drapes can come close, but unless they are built into a pocket or valance and go right to the floor plus overlap the side of the windows by at least 12”, you’ll still get some light coming into the room. We can provide complete blackout by combining opaque materials, side and bottom channels and additional light blocking from the headrail. Let us show you the difference!

I want motorized blinds or shades — do I need special wiring?

Most motorized shades are powered with rechargeable batteries, so no wiring is needed. If you want hardwiring (ideal for new builds or tech-lovers), we’ll coordinate with your builder and electrician so you’re fully prepared.

What kind of wiring do I need for pre-wired motorized shades?

Typically motorized shades use low voltage wiring. Usually they require a 2 or 4 prong wire ranging from 14 to 20 gauge (depending on distance) with a dedicated wire for each shade to be run back to a central location where a transformer will be installed and connected to the home’s power. Some products require the wiring to carry both power and data for ultimate performance. Don’t worry, we’ll work with your builder and electrician to coordinate the details - just make sure you contact us before or during the framing stage to ensure the best pre-planning.

What are the most durable window coverings for pets or kids?

Although nothing is completely “cat proof”, shutters are the most durable, easy to clean and safe solution. Faux wood blinds, and certain roller shades can also be good solutions. We’ll also guide you toward cordless or motorized options to avoid hazards and tangles.

What is the most energy efficient window treatment option?

People often ask what is the best window covering for keeping out the heat. When it comes to interior shades, Cellular or Honeycomb shades are best for insulation, especially double cell styles or room darkening fabrics. They help regulate temperature and can lower heating/cooling costs noticeably. They also reduce heat loss through windows in the winter. Read this to learn more about energy efficiency.

But the best way to stop the heat from beating in your windows in the summer, is to block it BEFORE it hits the glass. A Habitat Screen Shade is the answer!

Which window coverings block noise the best?

Sound absorption can be a great feature of custom window treatments. Cellular or Honeycomb shades are a great solution for noise reduction. Double cell construction and room darkening or opaque fabrics are the best choice. Add a black-out channel to the window liner for additional sound control. Custom drapes with thermal or blackout liner will absorb sound very well also, especially when installed floor to ceiling.

What do I use to cover my patio doors or sliders?

We’ve got great options depending on your style and needs:

What window covering are best for bay windows?

Most products can work in a bay window, but each situation is unique. Products with larger headrails will produce a larger gap between shades where the window meet when shades are lowered. It is important to understand how they will look and function both when they are raised and lowered. Cellular (honeycomb) shades offer a minimal gap between shades in the corners, and roller shades with reverse roll can sometimes address this issue as well.

For total coverage of a bay window, shutters are great option as the frames and moldings are made specifically to fit your window. Drapes and sheers are also another great option since we can bend the track to follow the shape of the bay.

Are shutters too heavy for my windows?

Not at all—shutters are custom-built to your window’s size and will be made up of individual panels as needed to cover your window. If we need to work around out of square windows, we can add a frame to finish the shutter off perfectly.

What are the best options for tilt and turn windows and doors?

Tilt and turn window and doors offer a unique challenge for window coverings. Because they both tilt and swing in to the window opening, there is not enough clearance for an “inside mount” window covering. We offer a few solutions that attach directly to the window/door and won’t affect the operation or warranty.

Shades can also be mounted “outside mount” above the window header so that they do not obstruct the operation of tilt and turn door or window. However in this scenario shades cannot be down when window or door is swung open.

Can I match my blinds to my trim or cabinetry?

Absolutely. We have dozens of neutral tones and wood finishes. Some vendors even offer custom colour matching if you want a perfect blend.

I have a beautiful view—can I still get privacy without blocking it?

Yes! Sheer shades, screen rollers, and top-down bottom-up shades are designed for that exact challenge. They soften glare and add privacy without shutting down the view. We’ll work with you to understand how the varying levels of opacity can solve your needs.

What’s the difference between roller shades and cellular shades?

There are so many different types of window treatment on the market these days - and it can be overwhelming! Roller shades are made up of a single piece of fabric or screen material that literally “rolls” on a tube at the top of the window. They offer a sleek, modern look and come in tons of colours and opacities from sheer to blackout. Cellular shades (often called honeycomb because of their construction) are better insulators—they trap air in pockets to help regulate temperature. Cellular shades also come in a range of colours, textures and opacities. Both products are available in multiple operating systems.

How do I operate my blinds if I can’t reach the top of the window?

Great question, and a problem we often face on Central Vancouver Island! We love our views and big windows, but Health Canada has limited the options by eliminating any exposed cords on window treatments. There are many child-safe solutions now that are compliant with the new Regulations. The most common solutions are “cordless” where you simply move the bottom rail by hand to the desired position - which means you either need to be able to reach the entire window, or use an extension pole. Alternatively there are operating systems that consist of “cord concealments” or “shrouds” that limit the amount of operational cord that is exposed. The ideal scenario for high or hard to reach windows is motorization. Motorized Wands (often called Autowand) is a great solution for those who don’t want the full automation or price point of remote operated options. Fully motorized shades or blinds can be operated with a remote control, smart phone or tablet and integrated with smart home devices like Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Nest, Control 4, Crestron and many more. Learn more about motorization and home automation.

Are motorized blinds and shades reliable?

Yes! Today’s motorized systems are very reliable and come with solid warranties. We help you choose the right setup and show you how everything works.

How often do my motorized shades need to be charged?

Depending on the size of shade, and regularity of use, your batteries will last between 10-18 months between charges.

Can drapes be motorized?

Custom drapes (also often called curtains) are functional, and even more so when they are motorized! We have a huge selection of decorative hardware that can be motorized and even sleek tracks that can be recessed into the ceiling, and bent to go around corners. Typically plug in motorization is best for drapes, but there are battery operated options available as well.

Can I control my blinds when I’m not at home?

Yes, In most cases a Gateway or Hub can be purchased to connect your shades to your home’s wifi allowing you to control your shades from anywhere in the world as long as you and your home are both connected to the internet. You can also create schedules so that your blinds, shades or drapes operate at pre-determined times throughout the day and week.

What’s the most affordable window covering option?

Horizontal blinds or vertical blinds tend to be the most budget-friendly. Roller shades are a great next step up if you want more style options. Although all of the products we carry are great quality, we do have a variety of price points to suit every budget. Our Cellular or Honeycomb selection has the widest array of pricing categories, so we’re very likely to be able to find something for every price point without sacrificing quality or our top-notch service. To learn more about pricing for window treatments, download our free Price Guide.

Do you have eco-friendly or sustainable fabrics?

Yes—most of our window covering suppliers offer fabrics made from recycled materials or designed with low environmental impact. Many options are GREENGUARD Certified - which demonstrates compliance with chemical emission standards and their commitment to healthier indoor environments. We’re happy to show you those options.

Can you do angled windows, arches, or skylights?

Yes—we have custom solutions for almost every shape and size window. Some specialty shapes have limitations, but we’ll walk you through what’s possible.

Do I have to get the same thing for every room?

Not at all. Many clients mix and match based on the function and style of each space. We’ll help you coordinate everything so it still feels cohesive.

What is the best product for blocking the sun or wind on my patio?

We have several options for outdoors that can control the sun, rain, snow and wind so you can utilize your outdoors space year round. If the summer sun is your main challenge, a retractable awning with UV resistant fabric (often called Sunbrella) can provide much needed shade. Awnings can be installed at a variety of angles to provide the right amount of shade where it is needed. Retractable awnings are available in manual crank operation or motorized and can have a wind sensor to keep them from getting damaged in case the weather changes.

If you have a covered area but want protection from the sun when it is lower in the sky, or to block wind and bugs a Habitat Screen Shade (captured-track roller screen shade) might be the right fit for you. This is a great option to add privacy to a seating or hot tub area, or maybe close in an outdoor kitchen.

For something that solves all of those issues, a free-standing aluminum pergola may be the way to go. Made to withstand our Canadian weather, the operable louvered roof is water tight, and can bare the typical snow load we see here on the coast. An aluminum pergola can be used year round with the addition of zipper track roller shades to enclose the walls. You can even add a heater and LED lights.

What can I use to enclose my deck?

Talius Habitat Screens are made in Salmon Arm and utilize a zip track to operate the roller screen, they are specifically for the outdoors and can withstand winds up to 150 km/h. They can be mounted between or to the face of posts to completely enclose a deck or patio area. The shades come in a variety of fabrics with opacities ranging from “bug screen” which blocks 55% of UV’s up to solid fabrics that block 100% of UV’s. An “openness” factor of between 1-10% is the most common, which allows you to maintain views but provides between 90-99% UV protection. We even have a clear option for unobstructed views with full wind and rain protection. This option is especially great for outdoor dining areas. They can be operated manually with a crank arm, or motorized for better functionality and convenience. Habitat Screens are a great option for commercial buildings as well.

What is a good security solution for vacation home?

There are a couple of ways to create a more secure home when you are away. Interior window treatments with motorization and that are on a schedule or operated remotely can give the appearance that someone is home. Many systems can be connected to home automation so that they are controlled and programmed along with security cameras.

Canadian made Talius Roll Shutters are a custom made product for residential and commercial applications. There are a variety of options that offer different level of protection depending on your needs.

Pricing & Other Decisions:

Why does your quote seem higher than what I saw online?

Online window covering suppliers typically sell lower quality products that may look and sound like the same thing, but they aren’t. With us, you’re getting full-service—professional measuring, ordering, installation, and ongoing care.

Of course. We detail every line so you can see what you’re paying for—product, control type, installation, and any promotions applied.

Do you price match with other blind companies?

It’s important to ensure you’re comparing apples to apples, and often things may be presented as equal, but they actually aren’t. We keep margins low so we can compete—without sacrificing quality or service. You might be surprised at how our pricing compares.

Is there a warranty on custom blinds and shades?

Yes—all of our products have a manufacturer’s warranty, which varies depending on the product. We back that up with our unprecedented No-Questions, No-Charge Lifetime Service Warranty. If something ever breaks or goes wrong, we’ll make it right and we’ll never charge you a fee for a service call.

We’re a small, service-focused business, and credit card processing fees can add up fast. To keep prices low for everyone, we offer e-transfer or cheque as fee-free options. You’re still welcome to use your card—we just pass along the processing fee at or below our cost.

Can I pay for my blinds in installments?

If I decide to only order one shade now, can I get more later that match?

Will you show me how to use everything?

Absolutely. We’ll walk you through operation, care, and any automation features. And if you forget later? Just call or email—we’re always happy to help.

Do I need to be home for the install?

No, if you can’t be there, we’ll arrange for getting a key, access code or you can have a neighbour let us in if you’re comfortable with that. Our installer is very trustworthy - in fact he’s part owner! Sometimes we do like to walk you through how to properly use and care for your new window treatments but we can fill you in via phone or email too. If we are doing motorized shades with an App we may need to send you a link to access control of the App which will walk you through the steps.

That’s rare, but if it happens—we fix it. We stand behind every order. Whether it’s a manufacturer issue or a measurement challenge, we take care of it quickly.

Do you offer repairs or adjustments down the line?

Our process is designed to make sure everything fits and functions perfectly, which is why we take detailed measurements during your consultation. But just so you know, we only release those measurements once the order is confirmed.

We do this for a couple of reasons:

  1. Accuracy + Accountability: Measurements are taken by trained staff using professional tools, and they’re tied directly to the products we recommend.

Will my window covering fade over time?

All fabrics and materials are UV-tested and treated, but direct sun can cause some fading over many years. We’ll guide you to fabrics and materials that resist this best.

How do I clean my blinds, shades and drapes?

Each product has its own cleaning guidelines, but most are low maintenance—just dust or wipe. Most blinds, shades and drapes can be dusted with a faux-feather duster or blow dust and bugs off with a blow dryer on low & cold setting. Many fabrics can be vacuumed and/or spot cleaned, but not all - so reach out if you aren’t sure. We’ll leave you with instructions and support if you ever need help.

Do I need to do anything to maintain my blinds and shades?

Interestingly enough, window treatments need exercise just like us! Most operating systems need to be used regularly to maintain their functionality. Lift mechanisms can get stiff and fabrics can hold “memory” which can affect how they hang or fold. For motorized shades with rechargeable batteries, you’ll need to charge them. Depending on the size of shade, and regularity of use, your batteries will last between 10-18 months between charges. Apps and other operating systems will need updating from time to time for bug fixes or firmware updates. Most blinds, shades and drapes can be dusted with a faux-feather duster or blow dust and bugs off with a blow dryer on low & cold setting. Many fabrics can be vacuumed and/or spot cleaned, but not all - so reach out if you aren’t sure. For other maintenance or cleaning, we’ll provide you with product specific details, and are always here for troubleshooting.

If you require us to come to remove the shade or assess it in your home or business there is a service fee to do so. Contact us directly for further assistance.
